The term ‘burnout’ was coined in the 1970s by the American psychologist Herbert Freudenberger and describes an exhausted, extreme reaction to severe stress and high expectations.
Many women feel exhausted by the demands of caring for children and ageing parents on top of earning a living – and at this time of year, with Christmas to plan too, we’re all craving some well-deserved rest. But for some, ordinary fatigue can spiral into burnout, a serious condition where your energy is so depleted that you’re ‘running on empty’ and you can become too ill to cope.
